“We’ll capture him,” I say. “Then there’s no chance of him leaving the mall or us waiting for a bomb to be dropped on this place. We don’t have to kill him. We only need to stop him.”

Travis snorts. “Like it’s that easy.”

“It’s not a bad idea,” Jensen says. “But how are you planning on stopping him, exactly? This isn’t the A-Team. We can’t build a zombie prison out of hand-me-downs.”

“Not a prison,” I tell them. “A trap. We don’t need to build anything. If we can get that thing in the right place, we’ll let physics do the rest.”

Grace’s lips twitch as she stares at me. “If you push it back in the hole, there’s a risk it will crawl straight out again.”

“Not the hole. But we will need some volunteers.”

“For a suicide mission?” Travis asks. “Count me out.”

“I thought you were brave,” Matthew mumbles, poking the bear more than I’ve ever seen him do before. “I’ll go with you, Noah.”

“You don’t even know what he’s planning,” Wren says.

My friend shrugs. “It doesn’t matter. I trust him.”

“Hear me out first,” I say, plucking every doubt that pops into my pounding head and bottling it. “I need someone to go back to Peter’s office. There’s a fuse box in there. We need to make sure the escalators are running. When they are, someone else will need to be ready by the emergency Stop button.”

“That’s it?” Travis asks. “That’s your big plan? You’re going to trap Franklin Holt halfway up an escalator.”

“Not exactly.” I crouch next to Grace and take her hand, where a single strand of Franklin’s wiry hair is still twisted around her finger. “How are you feeling?”

“I’m okay.”

“Wren, I need you to stay with her.” She nods before exchanging smiles with Grace. “The rest of us go.”

“Hell, no!” Travis says. “You don’t get to decide that.”

“Why not? You decided to storm the bookstore and hold a gun to our heads. You wanted to change people’s thinking by destroying the Burning Book in front of the whole town. Why do you get to decide things but I don’t?”

“Because you’re a…”

“A what? A loser? A loner? Is that the best you’ve got? Tired insults that don’t mean anything? I’m proud of who I am, Travis. I may only have one true friend, but that’s one more than you.”

Travis turns away from me. “You’re wrong.”

“You know Darlene didn’t come here for you. She came for AJ.”

“So?”

“So, how many of your other so-called followers don’t actually believe what you’re preaching?”

Travis spins around and pushes me in the chest. “I don’t care what they believe.”

Jensen nudges him aside, arms outstretched as he stands between us. “That’s enough! I’ll check the fuse box, provided you can guarantee me that thing won’t follow.”

Travis and I stare at each other, my eyes aching as I fight the urge to blink.

“I want you with me,” I tell Jensen. “Matthew should go to the fuse box, because we’ll be the ones distracting the monster.”

“Bullshit,” Jensen says. “Have you got a death wish?”

My heart beats faster as every eye in the room burns deeper into my skin.
